WG 1
Road Signs

WG1 is currently focused on a major revision to the two most relevant SABS Standards for Reflective Sheeting for Road Signs & Completed Road Signs, Introduction of the applicable SANS EN Standard for Road Studs into Regulations, a revision of the applicable chapter of the COTO Standard Specifications for Road & Bridge Works concerning Road Signs & introduction of a new colour to the SA regulations and manual in order to provide specific identify for Vulnerable Road User Traffic Signs

WG 1 members are represented on the following organisations:

  1. SABS Technical Committee TC1070 & working group WG02.
  2. The Department of Transport Road Safety Engineering & Signs Sub Committee
  3. The COTO Road Materials Committee (Industry Workshop Group)
  4. SARF National Road Safety Committee.

Aims of SARTSMA WG1 Membership Implemention & review of applicable Standards:

  1. Represent SARTSMA (& Industry) interests on decision making processes, assisting with development and / or revision of any legislation, design manuals, safety and product Standards that may have an effect on Members' businesses.
  2. To publish & present Guidance Notes to help Client Bodies, Members and Specifiers’ ensure appropriate Road Signage products are supplied.

Objectives for 2019-2020:

  1. Fully review all standards that are applicable to this Working Group & make representation to relevant COTO, SABS or related committee responsible for implementation.
  2. Membership of relevant committees where SARTSMA can influence improvements to standards & make best use of the expertise of the individual members within the Industry Sector.
  3. Ensure that all members are only manufacturing & promoting products that comply with the correct standards currently in place.
  4. Raise the profile of the SARTSMA organisation across the Industry Sector

WG 2
Road Markings

WG2 is currently focused on a review of the current SABS Standards for Solvent & Water borne Road Marking Paint, Introduction of relevant EN Standards that encompass all Road Marking products & revision of the current chapter of the COTO Standard Specifications for Road & Bridge Works, concerning Road Markings.

WG 2 members are represented on the following organisations:

  1. SABS Technical Committee TC0035-SC02 & working group WG.
  2. The Department of Transport Road Safety Engineering & Signs Sub Committee
  3. The COTO Road Materials Committee (Industry Workshop Group)
  4. SARF National Road Safety Committee.

WG 3 Vehicle
Restraint System

WG3 is focused on a major review of the current SABS Standard for Guardrails and Restraint Systems, Introduction of the balance of EN Standards for Vehicle Restraint Systems, a revision of the Road Design Guide (version 2003) & a revision of the applicable chapter of the COTO Standard Specifications for Road & Bridge Works concerning Vehicle Restraint Systems.

WG 3 members will be represented on the following organisations:

  1. SABS Technical Committee TC1003
  2. SABS Technical Committee TC 085 / SC04
  3. The Department of Transport RSESSC WG for Vehicle Restraint Systems
  4. The COTO Road Materials Committee Working Group (Industry Workshop)
  5. SARF National Road Safety Committee.
